The Trip 2009 - Sweden 30

Friday 31st July.

Elins name day!

It rained overnight and the morning was very overcast.

Today we start another adventure planned by Elin and Jim but at least this time they are coming with us. We packed, and as it was raining we took a taxi to the ferry terminal on Stadsgardsleden. It took some time to board our cruise boat, the Birka Paradise, and find our cabins. Jim had done us proud again, two en-suite cabins next to each other at the stern.

This is the view from our cabin looking along the wharf towards the Viking Line terminal.

These huge boats are very maneuverable with thrusters that mean they can virtually move sideways. The boat moved out in to the waterway and just spun around through 180 degrees.
We left about 1800 and should be in Finland about 0100.

We are heading for the island of Gotland. We will be following the main shipping lanes through the Archipeligo, heading in a northerly direction. We call at Mariehamn in Finland before heading south to Gotland. The greater part of the journey will be done over night.

Threading our way through the islands.

We passed the island of Alon where we spent time with Mia and Ulf. The sauna and jetty are just visible at the waters edge in the centre of the picture.

When we stayed on the island we had remarked on these islets that were bare of vegetation. It turns out that they are nesting areas for Cormorants and it is their droppings that are killing all the vegetation.

We went on one of these ferries as part of our journey to reach Alon.

There is obviously a good view from the flying bridge.

We had a very nice dinner. We all admitted that we had eaten too much so a quick walk around the decks. We then did a bit of duty free shopping before playing cards. I fell asleep and didn't hear a thing until about 0630 on the way to Gotland.
