The big tree in
our garden has been worrying Di for a few years now as she was told that it had
a split in it near to ground level.
As it was approximately 30mts
(100ft) tall and had stood for at least 50 years she thought we should get a price to
get it removed, or at least cut back. A few weeks ago there were a team
removing a tree down the road so she walked down and asked them to come up and
have a look at ours, with the view to getting a price for removal. Obviously
their answer was that considering its age and condition, it should come down.
Of course it’s always good to get a few other quotes so we set the wheels in
motion. We applied to council for permission to take the tree down citing our
concerns, providing a site map and photographs.
Our friends Pam
and Larry recommended a bloke that they use for cutting down trees, as did other
friends Wendy and Rob, so we ended up with three quotes. They ranged from expensive to very expensive. The highest quote came as a bit of a shock as I got on
well with the bloke, recommended by Pam and Larry, and felt that he would do a
good job. The first two companies were concerned about whether on not they could get good access for their trucks
and crane. We actually went with the second highest price, which
was slightly more than expensive, which we had from the company recommended by Wendy and Rob who are called The Tree
Boys and are from Lower Portland. We rang for a quote and ended up leaving a message, they rang back when they
said they would and an appointment was made. A woman arrived, Megan Peters, to quote the job at the time
she said she would. Very good and efficient service which I felt should be
rewarded. They could also do it within the week and had no concerns about
access. Luckily we got the answer back from council, following a number of
chase-up calls, that we could go ahead. The Tree Boys arrived on the due date at the appointed time of 07:00 as promised and very soon were in full swing. They were a great team to see in
action, everyone knew their role and how to go about it, under the leadership of
Shane Peters. Their climber, Nathan was a joy to watch, such skill and expertise.
We decided to leave the stump just above ground level as a reminder and
somewhere to put some potted plants. Just six hours from the start, everything
was tidied up and the last truck had gone.
