A nice sunny morning but still that chill in the air.
A last little walk alongside the River Ouse before leaving York.
After breakfast we started to load up the car and found that where it had been parked across the road from the B&B, under a big tree, had been the wrong thing to do. I'm not sure if the tree was dropping resin or there was wildlife in the tree but the whole car was caked with gunk.
Once on the road we called in to the first Petrol station we came to but we weren't aware that stations in the UK don't have taps or screen washering squeegee. We ended up cleaning the windscreen at least, using bottled water and paper towel.
We headed of for Harrowgate and then on to Skipton where we stopped for lunch. Skipton is a very nice town with a canal running through it and a big street market. We spent longer here than we had planned to as it was such a nice place.
A strange thing happened while in Skipton. We found a nice birthday card for Andrew Menzies in the National Trust shop but when we came to pay, the assistant would not accept a 20UKP note. Apparently it was the Trusts policy, as they would then have to keep more change on the premises. As it was a rather nice card we decided to get some money off our Cash Passport card or go to a bank and get some smaller denomination notes. Having eventually found a bank, no ATM, we went inside to withdraw some money only to be told they couldn't do that as we didn't have an account with them!! By this time we were getting a bit ratty as you can imagine. We were visitors in their town trying to spend money but they didn't appear to be interested. Wandering around the town we came across a Barclays bank and thought we would try our luck once again. No ATM outside so in we went. What a difference!! Explained our problem at the info counter and had very personal service. Excellent service.
I hope Andrew appreciated all the effort that went into getting his birthday card.
We continued on down the M6 and M5 to Droitwich were we are staying with Mal and Ivor. We rang Ray and have arranged to meet up tomorrow for lunch.
Mal mentioned that tomorrow the man from the Gas Board is coming to fix the toilet cistern. Now is that strange or what! Things have definitely changed in UK. It turns out that they have a home maintenance insurance with the Gas Board that covers gas, electricity and water but they buy their gas from another supplier!! Sounds a bit like a Goon Show sketch.
Lots of catching up to do with Mal and Ivor over a nice dinner before a bit of TV and to bed.
