Saturday 25th May.
We are on the move again. A quick bit of packing and having said our goodbyes to Mal, Ivor and their family we headed south for Dartmouth. We will be staying with Louise and Andrew for a few days. We were unaware that it was a Bank Holiday weekend and Ivor warned us that there could possibly be heavy holiday traffic on the roads.
That was a gross understatement.
Having filled up with petrol and set the Sat Nav for Dartmouth, the machine told us that the journey would take 3hrs 15mins, which sounded good. Once on the motorway everything was fine, lots of traffic all moving very quickly. About an hour into our journey everything started to come unstuck. Mile after mile of roadworks resulted in huge traffic jams or stop/start queues. The very nice lady in Google maps kept us up to date and even recommended different routes. We tired a couple of these alternative routes but still ended up back on the motorway in a queue. Of course, at the first service station lots of cars turned off and it was chaos with long queues for fuel and food but most importantly, toilets.
The traffic didn't start to thin out until we were very close to our destination and we finally arrived late afternoon. A journey that should have taken just over 3 hours turned into one of 6hrs 30mins.!!
The welcome from Louise and Andrew made it all well worth while!
Louise knows my weaknesses and served up one of my favorite dinners, Cottage Pie followed by Bakewell Tart. Yummy !!
Its good to be back and the sun is shining.
