A Swedish Odyssey......

Friday 6th July. The day dawned overcast and following a late breakfast we caught the ferry into the Nybrokyen, walked along the quay and boarded our cruise vessel SS Stockholm. We are having a cruise out to the inner archipelago.

More of those giraffe cranes.

And another beautiful vessel heading out to sea.

All along the waterside are lovely homes.

The Swedish archipelago is made up of over 2300 islands and we are on a 1.5 hour journey through the islands to Vaxholm. The first view of Vaxholm is its fortress.

As it was lunch time when we arrived, straight into the Vaxholm Hotel for a very nice lunch.

Its a very nice town full of charm and character. The sort of place you could want to settle in. Some of the shops were unattended but had a notices saying, if you want to but or pay, come to the yellow house next door.

The main street.

Same again.

Selling fresh fish at the quay side.

Our boat coming to pick us up for the trip home. She was running 15 minutes late so when we got back to the city we caught the bus and tram back, stopping to buy food on the way.
While in Vaxholm, Jim took us to see a state run liquor outlet which is the only place that you can buy wine, spirits or strong beer. You just cant walk into one of many liquor outlets like we have here. On entering to store you are confronted by rows and rows of glass fronted display cabinets, full of bottles. You find what you want, make a note of the display item, take a ticket from the serving machine and wait to be called to make your purchase.
