The Chairs.

Way back in 1966 we bought some chairs. Not just any old chairs but a couple of Scandinavian beauties. These iconic chairs were designed in 1957 by a Norwegian, Hans Brattrud and are from his Scandia Series. They were very popular in the 1960's but fell out of production in the 1970's when the original factory burnt down. The range was revived in 2001 by Norwegian company, Fjordfiesta.

Our chairs have been in everyday use since we bought them. They have been admired by many people and due to their unique design and good engineering, they are as good as the day they were bought. Young children, and the not so young, have given the swivel/tilt bases a good workout over the years.

The chairs were reupholstered about 25 years ago and I have replaced the feet with bigger ones to prevent them digging into the carpet.

As these lovely chairs will soon be fifty years old and were looking a little tired, we decided to have then reupholstered. To celebrate their vintage we thought it would be nice to have them covered in a material as close to the original as possible. We tracked down some material that seemed to match the original colour and this was confirmed when we found a thread of the original material caught in a screw hole. The work was carried out by a very good friend of ours, and a Master Craftsman, George Stockton.
The cushions, headrests and arms have all been rebuilt, the chairs look wonderful and will last another fifty years.

One done and one to go.

An old footstool was upholstered to match and complement the chairs.
