Hot Spot

When the new kitchen was installed, I connected the exhaust system from the range hood over the hotplate, through the outside wall.

The outside was finished off with a white eggcrate grille with a PVC mounting plate painted to match the external bricks.

After a few days of rain I was a little concerned that driving rain may be blown through the grille so decided to make a small cowl, or deflector, to fit over the grille. I made the cowl from offcuts of industrial grade grey UPVC which I had in the shed and again painted in to match the brickwork.

When I installed the cowl it looked great, but today I noticed a difference!!

This wall gets most of the summer sun and we have had some very hot weather. I noticed today that the shape of the cowl has been altered. Sometime during one of these very hot days, the cowl has been softened by the heat and while still soft we have turned the exhaust fan on which has blown the top surface up and cooled it into this new 'raised eyebrow' shape at the same time!!

If I knew how I did it, there may be a market for this new design.

i remember a similar thing happened on a vultrex job out at penrith. We dropped off some ducting and during the day it had rained and must have left a pool of water on the top side because the next days sun heated up that water and the top of the ducting had bowed inwards. but there wasn't a market for collapased ducting;-)
